The Critical Care Retrieval & Transport Programme develops clinicians capable of planning, preparing, packaging, transferring and safely delivering critically ill patients between healthcare environments.
The programme emphasises the practical realities of road-based critical care transfer, using realistic patient packaging, transport equipment, stretcher systems and ambulance-based simulation.
Participants work in multidisciplinary retrieval teams, integrating:

The programme does not attempt to turn participants into specialist retrieval clinicians in one day. Instead, its objective is to give clinicians a structured understanding of what makes transfer different, how to prepare for those differences, and how to respond when something goes wrong away from the resources of the hospital.
By completion, participants should be able to:
• Explain why critically ill patient transfer carries additional clinical and operational risk.
• Determine whether a patient is sufficiently stabilised for transfer.
• Undertake a structured pre-transfer assessment.
• Identify patient, equipment, environmental and logistical transfer risks.
• Formulate an appropriate transfer plan.
• Allocate appropriate roles within a multidisciplinary retrieval team.
• Prepare and package a critically ill patient systematically.
• Secure airway equipment, vascular access, drains, lines and monitoring for transport.
• Prepare transport ventilation appropriately.
• Calculate oxygen requirements and contingency reserves.
• Prepare infusions and medication for transfer.
• Configure monitoring and critical care equipment safely around a transport stretcher.
• Understand equipment battery and power requirements.
• Conduct an effective pre-departure equipment and patient check.
• Use structured communication during referral, transfer and clinical handover.
• Recognise the effects of transport physiology and environment on the critically ill patient.
• Anticipate deterioration before departure.
• Recognise and manage common critical incidents during transport.
• Understand the limitations imposed by working within a moving ambulance.
• Make appropriate decisions regarding stopping the vehicle when necessary.
• Demonstrate effective leadership, followership and communication.
• Maintain situational awareness despite noise, movement and restricted access.
• Manage equipment failure and resource limitations.
• Adapt transfer planning for selected specialist patient groups.
• Perform a structured arrival, handover and post-transfer debrief.
